Learning that I would still get acne was the biggest let-down of my adult life, next to student loans.

Afew years ago I had a “duh” moment when I found out that if I invested in beauty products that not only cleaned but soothed my skin, a lot of my skin problems went away. Revolutionary, I know. But no one had ever told me how to take care of my skin.

Now, gone are the days of Proactiv and wearing long bangs to cover up forehead pimples. Oh I know they don’t go away completely, but my skin is clearer than it ever was.

Aside from having a skin care routine, I always keep these three things in mind:

  1. A hydrated body leads to hydrated skin, so drink that water. Diet also has an affect on your skin, so another reason to choose more natural, organic ingredients!
  2. Know your stress levels and your body. When I get stressed, my skin flares up and it can snowball if I’m not careful. PMS also leads to this, so an awareness of your cycle and your stress means that you’re better prepared.
  3. Speak to an expert. Whether it’s your doctor or dermatologist, or even a skin expert at Aveda or a similar store, talk to people who get skin and face things. Pick up tips and tricks from people who want you to find the right treatment and routine for you.

Here are the products that make up my daily skincare routine. I love them all and if you use these, that you love them, too!


Step 1: Cleanser

Angels on Bare Skin from LUSH

I have really sensitive skin, like the kind of you scratch once it will turn red in a matter of seconds. Even applying products to my face will irritate it. So, I have to be careful of what cleansers I use. I want something that gets the dirt and grime out of my pores, but will leave my face feeling refreshed and happy. This lavender, rose, and chamomile cleanser from LUSH is just the thing.


Step 2: Toner

Synactif Lotion from Cle de Peau

I don’t like too much sent in my toner, I’d rather have healthy  pores that sweet-smelling ones. This toners from Cle de Peau luxuriously tightens my pores and doesn’t leave my skin feeling too moist or too tight. (The label says “lotion,” but trust me, it’s toner, not moisturizer)


Step 3: Boosting Pre-Treatment

Ultimune Power-Infusing Concentrate from Shisheido

This pre-treatment not only defends against aging and damage, but it also boosts the affects of moisturizer or serum that you apply after it. With a couple of pumps of this, your skin will already start to feel invigorated and new.


Step 4: Calming Concentrate

Tulasara Calm Concentrate from Aveda

The three-step face process is pretty standard, but I have to add this product that I love. This product from Aveda is like a tonic for sensitive skin. It applies similarly to toner, but has a slightly thicker consistency. It’s purpose? Literally a chill pill for redness. If you also have sensitive skin, this product is a must for your facial routine.



Step 3: Eye Cream

Lifting Eye Serum from La Mer and Replenishing Eye Cream from Abeille Royale

I know I’ll be thanking my current self in 30 years for using eye cream. These two products (I just can’t choose a favorite!) are invigorating and refreshing at the same time, so after a long day of staring at my laptop or my books, it’s just what I need to beat those dark circles.



Step 4: Moisturizer

Synactif Daytime Moisturizer from Cle de Peau (morning)

Did you know that you should use two kinds of moisturizer, one for the morning and one for the evening? Your morning moisturizer should be light and even contain a little SPF, like this one from Cle de Peau. And I have to be honest–I hate wearing sunscreen. I hate the sticky texture, I hate getting it into my eyes and mouth, but I really hate sunburns. So even on cloudy days (yes, there is still a risk for sun) I can know that my face is being protected.

Imperialis from LUSH (evening)

Then, in the evening I use a heavier moisturizer from LUSH. As you sleep, your skin rejuvenates and repairs itself, so a heavier moisturizer will take care of your skin for the night. This lavender and orange blossom combination is the perfect way to end a night!
